Richard Garnett - Getting To Know You

Industry Insight - 12 Jan 2023

Our newest addition to the team, Richard Garnett, has been with us since the beginning of December. Richard has come on board as Digital Content Designer to assist us with our exciting new Learning Management System.

Tell us a bit about yourself

I’m originally from Guiseley, but I now live over the other side of the Pennines. I’m married to Jen with two sons, and my two cats Stanley and Archie.

Where are you based?

So I’ve joined the RPC North West contingent along with Neil, Nathan and Mat. I work mostly from home, but like to ring the changes with trips to the local coffee shops for a change of scene from time to time.

How has your career path brought you to RPC?

Up until coming to RPC, I worked mainly in Manchester and the North West at a number of Design Agencies in various roles such as Designer, Art Director and Artworker, picking up a portfolio of different skills along the way. The position at RPC came to light whilst I was at an Ian Brown gig with my good friend Russ Gable, who’s a technical consultant at RPC. We got chatting about what I was up to and I mentioned I was looking for a full-time job opportunity as I was still currently freelancing at the time. Low and behold, after the weekend, Russ got chatting to Pete Gable about a project he believed I may be a good fit for. That’s how I found myself working for RPC on their exciting new LMS project. Lucky timing, good friends and music!

What attracted you to RPC?

A new challenge, the RPC family vibe, and the ability to work remotely.

What are you working on right now?

RPC’s had plans to create an e-learning platform to complement their classroom training for some time.  I am working on creating and illustrating the Primavera P6 and Unifier courses that will form the basis of RPC’s new LMS system.

What do you like best about your job?

I like working on the LMS system because I get to use my Graphic Design skills whilst also adding new strings to my bow, learning new systems and extending my knowledge on other digital aspects related to my role. I also enjoy the variety of working with different clients, using their guidelines and brand vision to create new and everchanging pieces of work. Every day is completely different.

What do you do in your spare time?

I like to go on walks around National Trust land dotted all over the country, my favourite being Formby Beach. I enjoy listening to music, too. I have an electic taste from House and D&B to Indie and Rock. I love a good traditional pub, and enjoy going to art galleries. My favourite artist is Jackson Pollock as I have always been a huge Stone Roses fan and sought inspiration from their artwork covers.

When you were a child, what did you want to be when you grew up?

A Graphic Designer or artist. I’ve done the first, maybe I’ll work on the second …

What’s the best piece of advice you’ve been given?

Never give up on your dreams, if you work hard and be nice it will get you far.

What’s on your desk?

I have a couple of plants, my Bradford City nut character, a printer, my Macbook and Ultimate Ears sound boom.

Tea or coffee?

I prefer a coffee – an Americano or Espresso.

Dog or cat?

Cat. No question.

If your house was on fire, what 3 things would you save?

My family, my Macbook and my iPhone.

And finally, what would your superpower be?

That’s a good one. Well, I’ve always been a big Marvel fan, and my favourite character is Gambit who is able to manipulate playing cards and has kinetic powers. Being a poker fan, I’d love this power.
