Mat Seage - Getting to Know You

Industry Insight - 09 Feb 2023

Unifier Consultant, Mat Seage, joined RPC from a background in graphic design, for a complete change of role. Find out why he chose to make the switch and what he does when he's not at work.

Where are you based?

Morecambe in Lancashire, home of heavyweight champion of the world Tyson Fury!

Tell us a bit about yourself

I’m born and raised in Morecambe. I’ve lived here all my life and have an 11-year-old son called Jacob.

How has your career path brought you to RPC?

I spent close to 20 years working within the web industry covering a number of roles including web and graphic design, social media and search engine optimisation to name a few. After so long doing the same thing I was feeling a bit fatigued and ready for a new challenge, which is where Nathan Lambert came in and really sold me on RPC. Having then been introduced to John Lister and Dave Hurren it seemed like a great company to work for and taking the plunge to try something new was an easy decision to make.

What attracted you to RPC?

More than anything, it was the opportunity of a new challenge: something to get me out of my comfort zone and learn new skills. The ethos of the company is an environment I feel I flourish in too and I wanted to get back to that kind of business after my previous role, where everything was very corporate and rigidly structured.

What are you working on right now?

I am learning everything I can about Unifier! I’ve been getting stuck into a few projects, mainly Dublin Airport, with Nathan, but have worked with Russ and Dave on a few other bits and pieces too.

What do you like best about your job?

The working environment is fantastic. All my colleagues have been very welcoming and supportive when needed, it’s just a great place to work!

What do you do in your spare time?

I’m football mad and my son is too which is handy as that takes up most of our time at weekends! He plays for a team on Saturday mornings and then we usually go and watch Morecambe FC play in the afternoons. I’m also a huge fan of the NFL and enjoy going to watch the games in London each year. Aside from that I like to keep fit. I don’t mind the odd walk up a mountain and I got part way through the Yorkshire Three Peaks last year, but still need to do Pen-y-Ghent to finish it off.

When you were a child, what did you want to be when you grew up?

Like most boys, I wanted to be a footballer, but I think it became apparent that wasn’t going to happen fairly early on! I was always interested in IT and had decided by my mid-teens I wanted to be a web designer which I managed to do straight out of college and then spent almost two decades doing.

What’s the best piece of advice you’ve been given?

Be curious, not judgemental.

What’s on your desk?

I’m a minimalist and don’t like clutter so I only have a charging pad for my phone and a drinks coaster.

How do you like your tea?

I don’t like tea or coffee! I’ll usually just drink water throughout the day.

Dog or cat?

Cat, they are less hassle!

If your house was on fire, what 3 things would you save?

My son, my phone and my collection of football programmes and memorabilia.

What would your superpower be?

The ability to manipulate time would be good, just like Bernard’s Watch!
